Thousands of cars a day passed the
derelict eyesore of the old Ship Inn on
the Belmont roundabout, hardly the
welcome visitors expect to a historic
city.
Now it has finally disappeared and Festive
News is delighted to show readers what is going
up in its place: an iconic well designed block of
35 flats being built to rent by Herefordshire
Housing. It will be completed in autumn 2019;
they are running a competition to find a name for
it. On the other side of the bridge, the even uglier
wreck of the fire destroyed riverside Greyfriars
Restaurant has also been replaced after decades
with a posh and expensive block of private
apartments. Meanwhile, the city still waits for the
redevelopment of the burnt out shops in High
Town to be given the go ahead by Herefordshire
Council after seven years of wrangling. The
developer, Elevate Property Group of
Birmingham have submitted plans for a superb
development of two retail units and 18 apartments
.The good news is that a major retailer is
interested in leasing the larger of the shops.

Full marks to Herefordshire Housing, the not
for profit company which took over all council
houses in 2002 for their pro-active approach to
creating much needed social housing. The re-
generation of The Oval estate at Newton Farm has
been a huge success and more projects are about
to start. In Blackfriars Street, across the road from
the Old Market shopping centre and directly
opposite the Edgar Street football stadium work is
underway on a block of 51 apartments, 22 for
over 50’s, nine for affordable rent and 20 for
private rent. Plans for 77 new apartments on the
site of the old council offices in Bath Street are
currently with Herefordshire Council.
