exclusively created
garden Arbour –
thanks to a little help from city centre
shoppers.
A weekend in October saw High Town taken
over by blacksmith’s forges and the clanging of
iron on anvils as members of the public, aided
by artistic blacksmithing students from Hereford
College of Arts set about shaping 1000 metal
Ginkgo leafs which will form the canopy of the
Arbour.
The exercise was part of a unique exhibition
highlighting the work of Artist Blacksmiths study-
ing the craft here in Hereford, the only city in
Britain to offer such a BA degree course which at-
tracts students from around the world. Many of
their highly creative metal sculptures were on dis-
play in venues around the city centre. The event
attracted large crowds and could be a forerunner
for similar promotions to be staged by Hereford
BID to attract more visitors into the city.
On display was the Ginkgo Arbour designed
and made by Ambrose Burne, himself a graduate
of the College of Art where he is now a lecturer
and also works from his blacksmith’s forge in
Kington. He said: “Hereford is internationally

He designed the Arbour to be a contemplative retreat for hospice patients
and visiting families in the peaceful surroundings of the memorial garden
at Bartestree.

A GOLFING GEM IN STUNNING SCENERY
The Herefordshire Golf Club is the spiritual home of golf in the county and not just
because it was the first when it opened in 1896. The course ticks all the boxes for those
seeking to play the noble game: A real challenge, a stunning location and a welcoming
clubhouse
Above all it can claim a pedigree linked to the renowned Gleneagles and some 400
other top courses around the country designed by Scotsman James Baird, himself a five
times winner of The Open in the first decade of the 20th century and founder of the
Professional Golfers Association.
The original club was built at Broomy Hill on the edge of the city but when in 1932 Baird,
by now a golfing legend was recruited to find a new site and create something extra
special for the county’s fast growing golfing fraternity, he discovered Ravens Causeway
at Wormsley, a 140 acre hilly spot, just eight miles from the city with magnificent views
to The Malverns, Brecon Beacons and the Shropshire Hills. A perfect location for another
of his golf masterpieces! And so it remains; a sporting gem and a great social venue.
Stuart Rank, newly appointed Director of Golf has been set the task of moving the club
forward into a new era building on the firm foundations of the past, especially the Braid
connection which puts the challenging course into an elite group. A Yorkshireman, Stuart,
40 is a highly experienced professional golf coach and before moving to Hereford a year
ago was in charge of the golf academy at Stoke Park, Buckinghamshire which featured
in the James Bond film, ‘Gold Finger.’ He coached Sir Matthew Pinsent, four times
Olympic rower gold medal winner, taking his handicap down from 16 to 1. He said: “My
objective is to enhance the golfing experience for our members and I am delighted we
have increased membership by 60 since I arrived.”
“The prime purpose of the club is to provide the very best facilities to play golf and we
achieve this at the highest levels. Social aspects of the club also need to be carefully
considered and the club restaurant is winning great reviews since Martin Carter, formerly
of the Crown and Anchor, Lugwardine took over as chef.”
Club members have the benefit of discounts in the restaurant, but non-members are
welcome to enjoy the facilities and the wonderful views of the course. It’s a popular venue
for private parties and weddings. An onsite revamped shop stocks everything a golfer
might need and a professional coaching service is readily available for beginners and
regulars wanting to improve their game.
Stuart and his team are making a big impact on their mission to rejuvenate a club that
has served county golfers well for over a centenary.
