The pupils at Hereford’s Riverside
Primary and Nursery School now have
an outdoor classroom in the middle of
what will eventually grow into a mini
forest thanks to the vision of former
Lions Club president John Weatherall,
who was vice-chairman of the school
governors.
John in 2012 planted 100’s of trees
on a one acre riverside field next to the
school, the first step in a project to
create a special facility for the children
to learn about nature and the
environment. John died in 2014, aged
64, but the aptly named ‘Weatherall
Wilderness’ is now completed and
was officially opened by his wife Sian
and sons David and Owen.
Sheila Taylor, business manager at
the school who co-ordinated the work,
said: “John’s vision is a lasting legacy

The riverside site at the rear of Asda
includes a covered activity centre and
a dipping pond and has been granted
‘Forest School’ status. A carved
impressive oak arch at the entrance to
‘Weatherall Wilderness’ is a fitting
legacy to John whose voluntary work
with Hereford Lions Club for over 30
years was highly regarded.
The project cost £5,000 and was
partly funded by donations from the
Friends of Riverside School, Hereford
Lions Club and the Sexton family of
