The 24th Annual Edition - December 2017
VOLUNTEERS VITAL TO COMMUNITIES
The need for more volunteers to work in their communities has
never been greater as local cash strapped authorities are forced to
cut many services the public relied on.
The call for people to sign up as a volunteer with a local charity
or community project was made by civic leaders at a Town Hall
reception when Hereford Lions Club celebrated the Centenary of its
parent body, Lions Clubs International with £1,000 donations to
each of ten local charities.
The Dowager Countess of Darnley, Her Majesty’s Lord
Lieutenant of Herefordshire who presented the cheques on behalf
of Lions Club, part of a global organisation with 1.4m volunteers
in 46,000 clubs in 200 countries praised the work of charities and
urged more people to become community volunteers to fill the gap
?
left by the loss of many vital public services.
Responding to her appeal for more people to join the ranks of
volunteers Lions Festive News, itself produced by volunteers, is
dedicating this edition to all those whose unpaid work makes a big
difference to the quality of life of so many fellow citizens.
The Mayor, Cllr Sharon Michael said: “More public services are
being cut and an increasing number of organisations now rely on
charities and volunteers to keep them going. Without more
volunteers many will collapse.”
Cllr Brian Wilcox, chairman of Herefordshire Council endorsed
the appeal for more volunteers saying: “Herefordians have a
marvellous community spirit and I am sure many more will want
to offer their help as volunteers.”
Hereford MP Jesse Norman also backed the Festive News
campaign to boost volunteer numbers, telling our readers: “It’s
great fun; you meet lovely people and your help will make a huge
difference.”
Will Lindesay, Chief Executive of HVOSS said: “There are
thousands of volunteers across Herefordshire making an incredibly
positive contribution to their communities. Volunteering provides
opportunities for friendship, social interaction and personal
development.”

Mayor Cllr Sharon Michael with representatives of the ten
charities collecting £1,000 cheques.
