The Fessenden School – Head of School – Position Statement
COMMUNITY
Students
Without exception,
the Fessenden boys
look you in the eye
and greet you with an
openness and
forthrightness that is
as genuine as it is
refreshing. It’s clear
that they are used to
communicating well
with adults and are
comfortable in those
settings.
There is an esprit de corps among the
students that is inspiring, fostering
excellent school spirit and loyalty to one
another. Each morning at the Upper
School meeting, boys present to their
peers, and each boy is expected to be
able to speak in public.
The Fessenden students come from a
wide swath of cities and towns in the
Boston area and from all over the country
and the world. In the past five years, the
school has had students from 84 towns
around New England, 28 states, and 23
foreign countries. The concentration of day
students is local but includes students from
every corner of Boston and from as far away
as southern New Hampshire.
Boarding is a very special part of the
Fessenden community. The school simply
would not be the same place without the 105
boarding boys and the 42 adults who live on
campus with them. There is something about
the fact that the school’s student leaders are
living on campus that adds to the respect they
derive from their peers
and the faculty. Forty
percent of the boarders
are international with a
healthy mix of nations
represented. The ninth
