Around Fernie, other locations to explore include the Fernie Oil Derrick, located at the Fernie Visitor Centre on Hwy # 3. This derrick is the last standing wooden oil derrick in BC. The metal components were used to drill the first oil wells in British Columbia in the Akamina and Sage Creek areas of the Flathead Valley from 1907 – 1930. In 1984, salvaged components were used to create this rig.

The Hosmer Mine Site is a historic coal mining and coke production complex located in the Elk Valley of southeastern British Columbia, approximately 19 km northeast of Fernie. Developed by the Canadian Pacific Railway( CPR) in the early 1900s, the mine operated for only a brief period( 1908 – 1914) before being permanently closed due to difficult geological conditions and poor economic performance. Today, the site is recognized as one of the most significant industrial heritage locations in the Elk Valley, containing remnants of coke ovens, concrete foundations, and other mining infrastructure.
To visit the site, turn off Hwy # 3 in Hosmer onto 6th Ave, then follow the blue heritage signs to Stephenson Road.
Pick up a copy of the Fernie & Elk Valley Cultural Guide for more stories on local heritage and attractions.
