the griz
The Griz has been Fernie ’ s mascot for over 40 years . It is said that he was born in a mountain cave and grew to be 7ft tall and weigh 300 pounds . Backcountry bootpackers have spotted him over the years and reported seeing him shoot his giant musket into the sky , bringing down blankets of powdery snow .
Every year in honour of the Griz , sporting events , competitions , gatherings and parades are held to mark the legend . The citizens who most embody the spirit of Griz are made honorary Griz for the remainder of the year .
