Undoubtedly, there have been craft fairs, bake sales, markets and fairs in Fernie for as long as the town has existed. From September through to May, Fernie Craft Fairs are a regular seasonally themed feature at the Fernie Community Centre. This winter, the Stocking Stuffers Craft Fair will take place on December 21st, offering shoppers a last-minute chance to pick up great small gifts just in time for gift- giving season. The Griz Days Craft Fair is a highlight of the Griz Days weekend and features a packed hall of unique locally made goods on March 7th. Emily Park recently took over operation of the Craft Fairs – currently there are 6 throughout the year – from former co-ordinator Tanya Malcom. Under Malcolm’s management, the Craft Fairs became a 100% hand-made event and increased the number of event dates. Park intends to maintain the handmade mandate and continue donating all entry fees to local charities. To introduce the artisans to the public, she runs a ‘meet the maker’ series on social media to offer attendees an insight into what goes into the production of the goods and what they can expect to see at the Craft Fairs. With the addition of Fernie Catering Co taking over the concession, each craft fair will now feature café seating on the mezzanine level and Park plans to have live music at the events. Vendors rotate between regular features and new additions at each event, including Sitka Studios, Soco Soaps, Maiden Perras Jewellery, Ouiman’s Woodworking, The Klapp Farm Jams, The Bacon Lady and Gemstones by Wendy.
