CP Rail, Teck and
the Coal Connection

Teck is the second-largest producer of seaborne steelmaking coal in the world, most
of which comes from the five Elk Valley Mines where approximately 4,000 people
are employed. An average of 10 coal trains pass through the Elk Valley daily on their
way to or from the port in Vancouver. CP Rail has transported millions of tonnes
of Elk Valley Coal annually since 1970; the powerful locomotives are a cultural and
economic icon.
