NATURAL HERITAGE
THE FORESTS
OF FERNIE
The Elk Valley’s microclimate of sunny, warm summers and winters of light, dry
snow have created a unique environment for flora and fauna and a rich ecological
and geographical heritage.
MT FERNIE PROVINCIAL PARK &
ISLAND LAKE LODGE
In the Cedar Valley located between
Fernie and the Lizard Range, Ancient
Western Red Cedars (pictured) line
the trails and road to Island Lake Lodge.
These trees are up to 800 years old and
create a magnificent environment to
enjoy Fernie’s abundant natural history.
An interpretive trail can be found in
the Mt Fernie Provincial Park. Guided
hiking is available at Island Lake Lodge.

ANCIENT COTTONWOOD TRAIL
In 2003, a grove of ancient Black
Cottonwoods was discovered at
Morrissey, approximately 14km from
Fernie. Confirmed to be more than
400 years old, these trees are the
oldest of their kind in the world and
measure up to 10 metres around. A
short trail with interpretive signage
accesses the cathedral-like space.
The Fernie Trail Map is available
online, at Fernie Visitor Centres
and at outdoor shops.
