BIRDS OF THE ELK VALLEY

As Fall descends on the Elk Valley , many birds depart for warmer climes to the south . Ducks , geese and owls are common during this season and Great Blue Herons can often be seen sweeping over the Elk River . Other birds like flycatchers , shore birds and waxwings , such as the Cedar Waxwing , pictured , are less likely to be spotted the colder it gets . A popular pastime , and particularly enjoyable during the spectacular change of foliage , birding in the Elk Valley is both rewarding and exciting . Visit riparian areas and forest meadows at dawn and dusk for best activity . Find more information at tourismfernie . com or pick up the Birding & Wildlife Viewing in Fernie Brochure from the Fernie Visitor Information Centre or Museum .
