A storyteller shares tales of Charlie at a past Wildcat Days Festival
ELKFORD – CELEBRATING 50 YEARS
A scattering of mobile homes and trailers at the site of the current Mine Parking Lot and a one-pump gas station were all that existed in Elkford 50 years ago . The few kids couldn ’ t ride their bikes because the gravel roads would flatten their tires , and all shopping had to be done in Sparwood or further afield . From these humble beginnings has grown a town to be proud of , where community spirit thrives , residents enjoy abundant outdoor activities , and the vibrant arts scene provides local writers , potters , photographers and textile artists facilities to share and celebrate their work .
Wildcat Days is named after ‘ Wildcat ’ Charlie Wiegert who had a ranch at Sulphur Springs in 1905 . His stern German demeanour gave him the reputation of being simultaneously cranky and cheerful . A warm welcome and a chat by the campfire brought many trappers to Charlie ’ s door . Charlie was the proud owner of the only padlock in the Elk Valley so he made a point of keeping it locked on his door , despite everyone knowing where the key was . To this day , Charlie ’ s hollow log can still be found near Sulphur Springs . In the winter , Charlie would fill the hollow with warm water and hot rocks to provide relief for his rheumatism .
