Caroline Payne grew up on the west coast of British Columbia surrounded by the endless inspiration of the natural landscape. She first experienced pottery while at The University of Victoria, which led her to further education at the Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson, BC, where she pursued ceramics. Upon graduation she was offered a job running the community pottery studio at The Arts Station in Fernie. Caroline aims to bring the whimsy and magic of other worlds to her work through her love of vintage china, Victorian pottery, and fairy tales such as Alice in Wonderland. Combining playful, inspirational elements with the rustic nature of stoneware, she creates pieces that are both beautiful and useful. IG / passionfruitpottery
Tathlina Lovlin is based in Elkford and has been creating pottery since the age of eight. Now 43, her practice has included a variety of experiences. She is an engineer by training with no formal education in pottery but after quitting work to raise a family, was able to get more involved in her passion and now spends around 15 hours per week in her home studio, which has two wheels and
a kiln. She also teaches classes through the Elkford Arts Co-op. She enjoys making candle holders and has recently begun working on larger bowls. Using her practice as‘ me time,’ she enjoys the need to clear her head to work effectively. IG / tathlinaspottery
Margie Sutherland has been working with clay for over 35 years. After retiring 8 years ago, she craved a creative outlet. Venturing back into the pottery studio at the Art’ s Station after a 15-year hiatus, she rediscovered her passion and now has her own pottery wheel and a small home studio. In the warmer months, the wheel is relocated to a small greenhouse and, as soon as the weather allows, right out into the garden were her creativity really takes off and clay globs can fly at will.
Margie uses red stoneware clay with clay slip texture. She loves the natural beauty of the exposed red clay and the glaze as it breaks over the slip texture. She finds inspiration in her passion for the outdoors, and this community that continually feeds her soul and leads her to create beautiful and useful objects. IG / growerthrower
