JOLENE MINER
Multimedia artist Jolene Miner has felt embraced and encouraged by the local Arts community since moving to Fernie in 2019 . She earned her BFA from the University of Saskatchewan in 2000 and now finds inspiration in the diverse landscapes and dramatic colour changes that we enjoy in the Elk Valley all year round . Miner began her art practice with painting and drawing , but always felt drawn to collage . A sense of wonder that she has held from childhood led her to the expressive nature of paper and found objects , embracing an artistic technique known as ‘ touch of the hand ’ where evidence of the artist ’ s individuality and expression are welcome .
Through the use of juicy colours , simple lines , and layering , she builds engaging landscapes that capture her spirit of creativity . Always eager to learn and evolve , she has recently begun working on wood bases and adding jewel-like wax finishes . Her style is intuitive , laying down individual pieces until the picture emerges , only gluing the work down in the final stages . For a more structured approach , she turns to bookbinding . This ancient artform necessarily has more parameters but by adding embellishments and unique stitching , a variety of effects can be achieved .
The artist has led workshops at The Arts Station in Fernie and has work on display and for sale at the Fernie Arts Co-op and at Art Gallery Kimberley , where she will be featured in the Art Market until December 24 . Opening February 29 at The Arts Station , Appleskins is a collection of new paintings . The artist followed a spontaneous approach with no limitations or objectives , allowing the pieces to emerge through repeating shapes , figurative references , and the occasional use of mixed media . See the show in the gallery through March . Jolene Miner lives in Fernie with husband , Jared , and their two Australian Labradoodles , Jake and Mabel , who are her favourite studio companions .
