FERNIE PRIDE SOCIETY
In 2016 , two events were the catalyst for the formation of the Fernie Pride Society when a local couple hosted a community QBQ ( queer BBQ ) and the mother of a Trans teen reached out to a queer historian for help in setting up a local Pride organization . The following year , the society hosted the first Elk Valley Pride Festival , an event that continues to be a popular feature each September on the lawns at City Hall .
Over the past seven years , the society has continued to grow , advocating for the local 2SLGBTQ + community , hosting visiting artists , and offering a variety of inclusive and accessible events to celebrate pride . Throughout the winter , watch for ‘ Rainbow Connections ’ social events and gay ski days , and be ready to cheer and wave your rainbow flags for the Pride float in the Griz Days parade !
