SECOND SKIN – SAVING THE PLANET ONE GARMENT AT A TIME

A new show from the Fernie Spinners & Weavers , featuring garments and textiles focusing on the sustainability and environmental aspects of hand made and locally produced clothing .
In this new exhibit , the Fernie Spinners and Weavers Guild looks at fashion through the lens of sustainability , showcasing how the natural fibre arts have a direct role to play in the growing Slow Fashion movement . Content encourages viewers to explore ways we can help make a shift away from the many negative impacts of Fast Fashion systems .
Items include a variety of textiles produced from dyeing , spinning and weaving locally made yarns , plus stitched , knitted , felted and upcycled garments along with interpretive information and tips and information on how you can play a part in stemming the tide of overconsumption and production in the garment industry .
From early January to mid March , many of the craftspeople will be in the gallery to present workshops and demonstrations on their techniques .
Events will be offered on Sundays starting at 1pm . Reservations and a small fee will be required for the workshops , demonstrations are included in Museum admission and do not require reservations . The following is a sample of the sessions that will be offered , other dates will feature spinning , loom weaving , knitting , and card weaving .
January 15 : Visible Mending Workshop . $ 10 . Join Hilary Deluca and Laura Loewen for a fun session creating art out of rips , tears and worn patches .
In February , Master Spinner & Weaver Gayle Vallance will offer a series of presentations :
February 12 : Dyeing with natural dyes . $ 20 . Participants will use worsted wool and three natural dyes to create blue , red and yellow yarn from indigo leaves , madder root and marguerite flowers .
February 19 : Felting friendship cups . $ 20 . Learn the basics of felting from loose wool fibre to create a small vessel , adding your own personal touch with colour and embellishments .
February 26 : Silk Reeling Demonstration . Gayle will demonstrate how silk fibre can be unwound from the cocoon of the Bombyx mori moth and wild Tussah moth to produce strong , lustrous strands and then woven into exquisite cloth .
