Chilango
The neon pink sign of Fernie ’ s newest restaurant glows through the window with a dreamlike quality , and that ’ s exactly what this eatery is for owners Erin and Pepe . Meeting in Vancouver almost a decade ago while working for a large hospitality chain , they dreamed of opening a Mexican restaurant together .
A new start in Pepe ’ s hometown of Mexico City was cut short by the 2017 earthquake and they decided to return to BC and Erin ’ s childhood home of Fernie with their young son . Working towards their goals , they purchased the popular and established Elk Valley Pizza Shoppe in 2020 , and opened Chilango in May , 2022 . ‘ Chilango ’ means a person native to Mexico City .
To take care of the kitchen and create a menu of authentic Mexican flavours , they brought in Emmanuel and Ximena , two professional chefs with international experience from DC to Australia . Dishes include enchiladas , tostadas , and ceviche , with sauces and marinades all made in house featuring traditional Mexican spices and ingredients from chipotle to pico de gallo . There ’ s a full selection of tacos , sopas , and plenty of mains to choose from including Chilango ’ s own Quesadillas , and Aguachile – a zesty mix of shrimp , red onion and cucumber marinated in a green sauce of tomatillo , cilantro and lime . For the sweet tooth there ’ s several options including a milk flan and crispy , light churros served with melted chocolate , sugar and cinnamon . There ’ s also a kids menu .
The bar is well stocked with a focus on beer and cocktails – margaritas are of course , a speciality . Open 5 days from 4pm , the restaurant is easy to find on Hwy # 3 on the corner of 13th street . While the exterior currently reflects the restaurant ’ s former style , inside it ’ s a whole new world . Step inside and experience a truly authentic taste of Mexico .
