Fernie Arts and Culture Guide Spring 2022 | Page 23

OPENING JULY 1st :
MICHAEL HEPHER – IN THIS TOGETHER
A new collection of works distilling several communities of the Columbia Basin into an iconography based on the Fernie mural All Kinds of Beauty , both by Fernie-based artist Michael Hepher . The exhibition of paintings and prints is enriched with social media engagement pieces , photos , and historical information .
“ In This Together is an attempt to create a body of work that explores a new iconography — a visual vocabulary — of what ties us together as Canadian Columbia River Basin residents . We are truly in this together , and to move forward we must find ways to act in each others ’ interests . We are colourful , we are imperfect , but we have each other and we have hope .” - Michael Hepher , 2021
SUMMER WALKING TOURS
Take a stroll with the Fernie Museum this summer and discover tales of conflict , courage and criminal behaviour . Walking tours are offered every Saturday and Sunday through July and August and take approximately 90 minutes . Tickets are $ 10 . Tours may be available on a walk-in basis . 11AM : THE GREAT FIRE On August 1st , 1908 , a wildfire swept through Fernie , razing the town in just 90 minutes and causing over $ 5 million in property damage . The resulting building ordinances created the town we enjoy today .
1PM : FERNIE AT WAR By advance reservation only . Far from the front , Fernie was still devastated by the impact of WWI . Many young men signed up and never returned , while local internment separated families and turned hardworking immigrant miners into convicts .
3PM : RUMRUNNERS ! When prohibition hit Canada , local entrepreneurs did a roaring trade transporting whiskey and other goods between Fernie and the Crowsnest Pass . Events came to a head on September 21 , 1922 with a car chase followed by a violent shoot-out which led to a tragic end for Fernie ’ s bottle king and his young assistant .
