CULINARY FEATURE
House of Gato
Tucked away on the side of a building right in the middle of town is a little window dispensing delicious treats . Crispy croissants , mouthwatering macarons , scrumptious sandwiches , freshly baked bread , and delicious hot drinks are available to take away and enjoy at your leisure – we recommend walking over to the lovely gardens at City Hall or the Courthouse to enjoy a picnic feast surrounded by beautiful fall scenery .
Owner Catherine Chartrand felt the lure of the mountains and first moved to Fernie in 2006 . She returned to her native Quebec to study , receiving her certification as a pastry chef from Ecole Hoteliere de la capital in Quebec City , and quickly returning to Fernie . She began selling baked goods at the Mountain Market which sold out every weekend , and she was encouraged to grow her business by friends and regular customers . The search for permanent premises took a while but was eventually successful and House of Gato finally opened in December 2020 just off 2nd Avenue in downtown Fernie .
