From mid- September into October , the flanks and riverbanks of the Elk Valley change colour in a searing kaleidoscope of saffron , umber , and scarlet as the Black Cottonwoods , Paper Birch , Trembling Aspen and Western Larch shed their summer canopy as the first snow begins to approach .
