Rule #3:
Rule #1:
Know all the rules of the game
Learning Poker? Whether for the
World Series or not, please do
observe the following:
Amongst the newest aficionados, the
learning curve isn’t daunting as there’s a
subtle element of skill involved in its
learning. Casinos are understandably
noisy, buzzing with the mega-rich and
wannabes alike and somewhat extrava-
gant. And that’s why it isn’t the best
place to introduce a game of poker to a
beginner! If you are learning this game
and you’ve luckily found a helper, be
sure to master terms of the game.
Phrases like “raise,” “call,” “bet,” “check,”
“fold,” or “all in” are golden and shouldn’t
be thrown about if it isn’t your turn. In
particular, any small error can be disas-
trous, whether verbally or by any
gesture.
Quite frankly, poker isn’t as frighten-
ingly complicated as you often see.
Know how it works, table positions,
terms and what they mention and
such. There are many YouTube videos
you can watch to learn the rules and
simple strategies.
Rule #2:
Hand Rankings - Know Them
Newbies usually struggle while trying
to discern which hand of cards is a
winner. Hand rankings include Royal
Flush, Flush, Full House, 4-of-a-Kind,
Straight, 3-of-a-Kind, 2-Pair, Straight
Flush, 1-Pair and High Card. It can
take a while before you tell between
pairs and straights and flushes, just
hang in there. You can practice your
skills online for free on many different
poker sites or you can even try your
luck right here in the Sortis Casino
which offers 1-1, 1-5 Hold’em games
and larger 25-25 Omaha games.
The Vocabulary, know it!
Whether it is a casual game or a
competitive one, know all of them.
You should learn what the button is,
where the cutoff is and what an ‘all in
is to name a few.
Rule #4:
Table Etiquette - observe it at all
times
You need to be attentive at all times,
be all ears, leave your cards on the
table and in sight and talk only when
it is necessary. There are more good
habits to be learned at the table.
Rule #5:
Master some Gaming Strategies
Strategies are endless, but as an
introduction, observe these:
- Poker is a game of patience, don’t
play every hand.
- Be careful while betting, you can’t
take your bets back.
- At all times, be aware of your table
position.
- Be smart and witty and always try to
guess what others could be having. As
you get more
familiar with the game it gets easier
and easier.
- Watch some videos on YouTube
about poker “tells”.
- Above all, practice, practice and
practice, mainly online!
As the old saying goes, “it takes 5
minutes to learn and a lifetime to
master”.
