Winner AISF Best Use Of Anodising Australian Aluminium Finishing Melbourne School of Design, Faculty of Architecture, Building & Planning, University of Melbourne, Parkville, New South Wales. The new home to University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning has been described as a living, pedagogical building, with the new facility setting new standards for education design in the Asia Pacific region. The building has four distinct façades, each responding to the unique conditions they face. In addition to this, the design of the building represents all disciplines taught by the Melbourne School of Design, including architecture, landscape architecture, property and construction, urban design and urban planning. With its many inventive structural and environmental ideas, the building becomes a live learning tool for students and staff alike. Connecting back into the network of buildings and courtyards, the design operates as an urban gesture reinforcing the workings and systems of the campus. The transparent façades and open permeable ground plane reveals the creative and collaborative activities to the rest of the university community. JUDGES’ COMMENTS The anodizing creates an interesting and beautiful design that also affords practical shading for the building. An elegant use of anodizing.
