DSMZ researchers outline mechanisms of marine bacterial communities degrading plastic materials >
The Leibniz Institute DSMZ - German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures GmbH
Plastic waste is increasingly becoming an environmental problem . Even the introduction of biodegradable plastic in the production of coffee cups , for example , has not contributed to reducing waste . Although biodegradable plastic can be used in part by microorganisms as a food source , knowledge of the degradation processes is still incomplete . For example , the degradation of plastics in the marine environment has not yet been well studied . In their current study , Dr . Basak Öztürk and her team have now investigated how marine microorganisms decompose and recycle biodegradable plastic .
