room?
I can’t count the num-
ber of times I’ve sat
down with my Bible
or my prayer jour-
nal, eager to spend
some time with God.
And then I habitually
glance at my agenda
or my phone lights up
with a reminder and I
inevitably start think-
ing about all the more
“productive” things I
could be doing. When
I do this, I miss out on
such valuable mo-
ments with Christ.
I imagine Martha and
I share the spiritual
gift of hospitality. She
just wanted to throw
the perfect little dinner
party for Jesus. Our
desire to serve others
is a gift from God, but
it becomes dangerous
when we can’t pull
ourselves away from
whatever we’re pre-
paring for and recog-
nize that there may
be something more
important at hand.
Mary knew that Jesus
didn’t care whether
the bowls matched the
plates. The importance
of her daily tasks and
preparations paled
in comparison to the
page 32
opportunity to spend
time with Jesus. She
dropped everything.
Are you in Martha’s
place today? Frustrat-
ed by all that needs to
get done and the little
amount of time you
have to do it in. Des-
perately wishing for
some rest, some quiet
time, some relief.
You’ve got it! It’s wait-
ing for you in your
living room. Or your
bedroom, or your
front porch, or wher-
ever you wish to en-
counter Christ today.
He’s here, waiting for
you to set down your
dish towel or close
your laptop.
The days when we run
around just trying to
get everything done
at whatever cost are
the days that leave us
feeling exhausted and
unfulfilled. And what
does this benefit us?
We are not judged by
our accomplishments.
If Jesus came back
today, I don’t think He
would care whether
your bed was made
or your bathtub was
scrubbed.
What truly matters is
our relationship with
Christ. How much
we value Him. Is it
enough to drop what
we’re doing and sit at
His feet for a while,
or are the calls of our
busy daily lives too
much to resist?
Sitting at the feet of Je-
sus. Unrushed, peace-
ful, without an agenda
or a timeline.
This is where our true
purpose can be found.
I, for one, need to slow
down. I need to pay
more attention. What,
or who, is God calling
me to today in the
midst of my daily er-
rands and tasks? I need
to trust Him enough to
let myself rest in Him
and know without a
shadow of a doubt that
there’s no better way I
could spend my time
than that.
“The Lord is my
shepherd, I lack
nothing. He makes
me lie down in green
pastures, He leads
me beside quiet wa-
ters, He restores my
soul.”
Psalm 23:1-2
