For me emancipation commemorates the struggle my ancestors endured so I can enjoy the freedom that I have today. Growing up in my household my mother taught us many things about our history and culture, about the men and women who were pivotal to the rights and freedom we have today

On a normal day we had discussions about the struggles of many freedom fighters throughout the course of history. My mother made sure we were knowledgeable of our black history and the journey that they went through leading up to the day were granted freedom. Much so now that I can read the Yourba language, so for that I am thankful .
