Intisar Abioto graduated from Putney in 2004. She’ s now a professional photographer and artist for different organizations and companies. She’ s also the creator of blog The Black Portlanders.
What’ s your job or what are you working on currently? Right now, I do a number of things. I am a professional photographer and artist. I do photography for a lot of organizations, sometimes companies. I also work on my own photography projects, and speeches for colleges and companies. I still dance, but not so much as photography.
What are some of your photography projects? A lot of my projects in the past five years are portrait-based works. I have been doing many portraits of African Americans in Portland, Oregon for about five years. Also, doing portrait for black people in other places. That’ s been my primary personal artwork. Before that, I did a lot of story-based work, exploring folktales.
I saw your blog The Black Portlanders? How did you start this project? I came to Portland at 2010 and I wasn’ t from here. And photography was one way for me to get familiar with this place. One day I was walking on the street and I saw someone who was interesting, so I asked her if I could take a picture. Since then, I kept approaching people and asking about their experiences in Portland. I enjoy using art to explore a subject.
