Feeling the Sunshine, Spring 2020
An EHS Student Special Feature Publication
What to Do by Brenton Coates
As a student athlete, I have tried to take as little as a physical
break as possible, training when I have free time from work, as I would if
school continued normally. Some weeks, I arrange time horribly or lazily
(as we all have) and find that I can’t workout for very long. On those
days I typically do push-ups and sit-ups to break up my work, and if it’s a
nice day I do my work outside on the deck. Other than that, I try to stay
active and keep a healthy diet. In this article, I will help guide you
towards happiness and healthiness to prevent those 10 added quarantine pounds.
It’s important to the body to set routine, as doing so can make us feel more in control of
the day; they also help cope with changes and reduce stress levels. Though it may feel there is
nothing better to do than staying up until 3am, you should be going to sleep (relatively) normal
time (For me this is around 10-11pm) and waking up early as well (for me around 9am). A good
start to the day will sync you with the sun and set a good internal clock. I recommend making
breakfast and maybe even a smoothie* to give yourself a healthy concoction with a side of
accomplishment. Relax while eating and enjoy some early sunlight before doing some work.
Two classes each day sets you up nicely for Friday off, or two easy days of only doing one class.
Eat lunch, making sure water is part of this, and maybe go on a bike ride or workout for fresh
air. Around sunset relax with the family and enjoy the night knowing you have accomplished a
lot today. Because you have woken up with the sun, it should be easy to fall asleep as the sun
sets for another day.
3/4 cup Orange Juice
1 cup Strawberries
1 Banana
1/2 cup Blueberries
(optional Ice cubes)
in a blender
a great healthy smoothie to start the day
A big thing students are missing out on with this distant learning are sporting events. For
seniors, this hurts even more as they missed out on a chance to get scouted this season.
(Scouting is when experienced evaluators come from colleges to potentially recruit players to
their school.) However, that does not mean they will never get a chance, and it’s important no
matter what grade to keep practicing sports so you don’t get rusty.
