Breed All About It!

Description: The Mini Australian Shepherd is a herding dog, selectively bred to be a smaller version of the Australian Shepherd. Aside from the size difference, there is little variation between the two breeds. Usually merle, Mini Aussies have medium-length, weather-resistant double coats that come in a variety of colors, including black, red, blue merle, and red merle, with tan or white markings. Their eyes are shades of brown, blue, hazel, amber, or bi-colored. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 2015, and is officially known as the Miniature American Shepherd.
Temperament: Mini Aussies are smart, affectionate, adaptable, gentle, and energetic. They are easy to train because of their intelligence and eagerness to please. Aussies are people-oriented, and love having a job to do. They excel at high-intensity activities like herding, agility, and tracking. Puzzle toys, scent work, training, and interactive games like fetch and tug-of-war are great ideas to keep your Aussie from getting bored, restless, and anxious. These dogs make wonderful family companions because they are very devoted to their people and get along well with kids. While affectionate, this breed can sometimes be reserved around strangers.
Average Height / Weight: Mini Aussies can weigh anywhere from 20- 40 pounds, and grow between 13 to 18 inches tall.
Health Issues: Mini Aussies are prone to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and epilepsy. Merle-colored Mini Aussies also have an increased risk of skin cancer, and eye and ear problems, including blindness and deafness. An inherited condition also causes the breed to have multiple sensitivities to certain drugs.
Exercise: This breed requires lots of exercise to stay happy and healthy, and can become destructive if they are not given enough mental stimulation or are left alone for long periods. They also have boundless energy and need a person or family that can keep up.
Life Expectancy: 12- 13 years.

Grooming: Mini Aussies shed heavily and need frequent brushing, at least two to three times a week. A slicker brush helps with tough tangles and matts. Bathe these dogs about once a month to reduce odor and keep their fur and skin healthy.
