International Biscuit Day
by Cheyenne Pratt , Veterinary Technician , Calico Creek Veterinary Clinic
Dog biscuits have been around since the mid 1800 ’ s and they are still the most popular treat today . An American entrepreneur and electrician named James Spratt created the first dog biscuit around 1860 . Mr . Spratt was on a business trip in England when the idea came to him . He witnessed the sailors at the docks feeding hardtack to the dogs . Hardtack is a hard , dry biscuit given to sailors as survival food for long voyages . This inspired James Spratt to make biscuits specifically for dogs , with ingredients including vegetables , beet root , wheat , and beef blood . The biscuits were called “ Meat Fibrine Dog Cakes ” and were considered a meal , not just a treat .
A second dog biscuit came on the market in 1907 and was named the “ Milk Bone .” Milk Bones were made at a small bakery in New York , known as F . H . Bennett Biscuit Company . These biscuits were called Milk Bones because the original recipe contained a large amount of cow ’ s milk . The creator of the Milk Bone , Carlton Ellis , made them bone shaped after his own dog refused to eat the square shaped biscuit . Over 100 years later , Milk Bone is still a popular brand that now has over 20 types of dog treats .
