Lock Haven Winter Sports Firing On All Cylinders
As the second semester of the 2023 / 24 school year started in early January , the excitement surrounding Lock Haven University sports continued . After the LHU football team shocked the sports world by winning fivegames in a season for the first time since 1982 , the winter teams took over , and the result for both basketball teams has been just as surprising .
The men ' s team needed time to get to know each other after several new players arrived via the transfer portal , but within a month or so , cohesion was achieved - just in time for the PSAC season to start . And the results speak for themselves - this group is resilient , never gives up , and is a threat every time they take the court . Halfway through the season , the LHU men have won 5 out of their last 6 games , sport a winning record , and look to be on the way to the postseason playoffs .
Then , there is the women ' s team - they are skilled , experienced , and confident . So much so that they lost their first game of the season , then ripped off 13 wins in a row to hit the season ' s halfway point 13 and 1 . They lead the conference and should be nationally ranked .
Both wrestling teams are also excelling so far - but that was expected . The women have been nationally ranked since the pre-season , and have lived up to that forecast , staying within the nation ' s top ten throughout . Ditto for the men , who have been consistent since Thanksgiving , ranking as high as 20th in the country .
If the point of the regular season is to prepare for the post-season , both sets of LHU grapplers will be ready . Even Lock Haven alumni are excelling - revered retired LHU field hockey coach Pat Rudy is not spending her time gardening or reading books . Instead , she has now committed full-time to being part of the World Masters field hockey team representing the United States . Rudy , who coached the LHU team for 27 years , retired with 388 wins . She was elected to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2018 . She is one of four fomer LHU teammates from the late 1970 ' s ( Rudy ' 77 , Pam ( Whittaker ) Sherry ' 78 , Jane ( Shaw ) Cygan ' 81 , and team manager Denise Gobrecht ' 79 ) who competed in the first-ever 2023 World Masters Hockey Pan American Continental Cup in Buenos Aires in mid-December . Over a six game series , competing against teams from Argentina , Canada , Chile , Paraguay , and Uruguay , Team USA finished 3 and 3 , capturing the bronze medal . Pat Rudy and her teammates are looking ahead to 2024 , as they are set to compete in the Masters Tournament in Amsterdam in June and the World Cup in New Zealand , slated for November .
Hear over a dozen games and matches through the Bear Country Sports Network throughout the rest of the winter sports season . You can find the on-air schedule listed on GoLHU . com and bear999 . com .
