SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS
Almost half of the 2022-23 school year is behind us , and it ' s time to look back since the doors of Montoursville ' s four schools reopened in late August .
Highlights this year so far include the presentation of academic honors to senior Jaeda Smith , one of 62,000 students from across the country identified by the College Board ’ s National Recognition Program . The award can be included on college and scholarship applications and connects students with universities across the country , helping them stand out during the admissions process . Congratulations to Jaeda Smith !
Hundreds of borough residents will never forget the loss of Flight 800 28 years ago , The plane was lost over the Atlantic near Long Island , and 230 passengers perished . Twenty-three of them called Montoursville home , students and teachers associated with the high school French Club , on their way to Paris .
A movement to create the Montoursville Memorial Garden to honor those lost has gained traction over the last year , with over half of the needed $ 200,000 already collected . Montoursville students have been more than involved in the collection of donations , planning and participating in fundraising events like selling lemonade and collecting cash during in-school dress down day . These efforts will continue throughout the school year .
Hundreds of district students are keeping busy with STEM projects , after the program has expanded throughout the two elementary schools ( starting in kindergarten ), thanks to a half million dollar PA SMART Advancing Grant . Goals were set for each grade level , and students are brainstorming , then coding and programming drones and VEX robots through challenges and obstacles . They will continue at the same pace for the rest of the school year .
All of these activities show that students are living up to the Montoursville School District motto : Pride . Excellence . Tradition .
