Time Passages

FROM THE PUBLISHER
It was late in December , the sky turned to snow All round the day was going down slow Night like a river beginning to flow I felt the beat of my mind go Drifting into time passages Years go falling in the fading light Time passages – Al Stewart

If there is anything I have learned in my two-plus decades at Rhode Island Monthly , it ’ s that change is constant , often unexpected and out of my direct control . So , after twenty-seven years at the magazine , editor Sarah Francis has made the decision to step down and pursue a multitude of projects , including freelance writing , which , ironically , was her first connection with Rhode Island Monthly . I named Sarah editor seventeen years ago and her encyclopedic knowledge of past issues and stories we ’ ve published over her tenure is remarkable .
At the same time , we are losing a talented journalist as senior editor Casey Nilsson has decided to embark on a career shift to academia . Casey ’ s accolades over her decade with Rhode Island Monthly are numerous . More than once she has been named the year ’ s Distinguished Journalist by the Rhode Island Press Association . We take solace in that Casey will continue to contribute to the magazine as her new job permits .
And now we turn the page as Jamie Coelho will take over the editor ’ s role , with an extensive list of ideas and some new members on her team to bring them to reality . Jamie ’ s award-winning coverage of food , dining and the hospitality industry is well known and respected . With more than a decade at the magazine , she is an experienced writer and editor with a passion for our state . And so , the next chapter begins .
Jamie ’ s handiwork is front and center in this issue with the cover story , “ Get Baked !” Assisting in this “ difficult ” research assistance into where to get the best sweet and savory baked goods , breads , pizza strips and desserts are Jamie Samons and Grace Kelly . Jamie even pressed the Rhode Island Monthly staff into service with an elaborately planned pizza strip tasting .
And apropos of her well-chronicled handiwork in Rhode Island Monthly , Casey Nilsson gets up close and personal with Trinity Rep ’ s Joe Wilson Jr . in “ The Leading Man ,” whose work on stage as an actor , director and in the community has made a huge impact on the arts scene in Rhode Island and the region .
So , we head into the thirty-fifth year of Rhode Island Monthly undaunted by change , but also enthused in anticipation of a great read in the next chapter .
To the Rhode ahead . – J . J . P .
