LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Dear members of SJGCC ,
After some unseasonably warm weather , it seems winter is finally upon us . We have had several frosts already in the new year including one the other day that several people commented they had never seen such a heavy frost on the property . Thank you for your patience during frost delays as it is a necessary evil to maintain healthy turf .
We will be doing everything we can to keep the greens healthy through the upcoming winter months . The plan is continuing with monthly solid tine aerification and light weekly topdressing . The aerification process is minimally invasive and usually not noticeable after a good roll of the greens . I know at times the sand can be seen as a nuisance , but it really helps smooth the surface , protect the plant from heavy traffic through dormancy , control algae on the surface and dilute organic matter within the soil profile .
The range tee was just re-seeded again and should be looking good in a couple of weeks . We have been incorporating seed into the divot mix we use during weekly range maintenance to try and keep up with the divots but seeding the whole surface again will hopefully give it a more uniform and appealing look . Otherwise , we continue working on small projects around the course and spot spraying to keep weeds at bay . Happy New Year to all !!
Thanks ,
Mike O ’ Malley
