PRESENTATION :
PFAS and the Environment : Importance of Mass Fluxes and Balances
Perceptions of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances ( PFAS ) are often focused on concentration measurements in water , with the emphasis on exposure via drinking water . Points of reference have become the low part-per-trillion standards established by certain states . However , the use of concentration-based limits for media other than drinking waters may miss important “ big picture ” considerations , such as mass flux , mass cycling , and fate of PFAS in the environment . This talk will include discussion of water as a carrier of PFAS in the environment , soil as a critical reservoir for PFAS , and the importance of air and atmospheric deposition .

Join ASCE-NH for this 1.0-PDH lecture to learn more about this emerging contaminant and its unique challenges .

Harrison Roakes , PE , is an Environmental Engineer and Project Manager with Sanborn Head . He has broad experience in soil and groundwater investigations , with a focus on statistical analysis of environmental data and subsurface contaminant fate and transport . He holds a B . S . and M . S . in Environmental Engineering from the University of New Hampshire .
Stephen Zemba , PhD , PE , a Project Director with Sanborn Head , has three decades of experience assessing health and environmental risks . His projects encompass fate‐andtransport modeling , exposure assessment , and risk assessment . Steve has provided litigation support and expert witness testimony for private and public sector clients . He is a frequent presenter at conferences and has published numerous articles on topics related to PFAS , environmental modeling , and risk assessment . Steve attended Carnegie Mellon University ; he earned a master ’ s degree and PhD in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology .
