Something pinged off the Dyce Head sign . Jasper took a step toward his car and a puff of gravel flew up at his feet . Cassidy swung around toward the house and saw a curtain flutter . She screamed . “ Run !”
He rose on his knees , hoisted himself up to a crouch , and took off after her . They sprinted down the lane till they were out of sight of the house . “ Hold on , Cass ,” Jasper panted . “ We ’ re out of range now . Let ’ s walk back to Fort George . Maybe Flint ’ s still there . We need to call the police .”
The caretaker was nowhere to be seen . Cassidy slumped down on a rock . Jasper bent over , hands on knees , catching his breath . She indicated his pocket . “ Why don ’ t you call 9-1-1 on your cell ?” “ Left it in the car . Where ’ s yours ?” “ Left it in my purse . In the car .” “ Well , Ollie , here ’ s another fine mess you ’ ve gotten us into .”
