With “ shares ” and “ retweets ” so pervasive , it ’ s easy to overlook the power of good ol ’ fashioned press coverage . Getting featured in newspapers , magazines , and on local TV can give your business added buzz and reach beyond your followers . There are some basic steps you can take to increase your chances of being featured , and it ’ s often easier than it might appear .

START LOCAL

It ’ s far easier to get your voice heard at the smallest local level than to pitch Time or Woman ’ s Day right at the start . Momentum matters in gaining media attention and one story often leads to another , larger one . Go for the low hanging fruit first and get yourself featured in your town ’ s neighborhood newspaper or Patch site .
As a former editor of seven small-town newspapers , let me assure you , hearing from you will make some editor ’ s day . Let them know you ’ re available for interviews , photos , video chats , whatever they need . But also provide them with enough information in the form of a tidy press release so that even if they don ’ t have time for a call , your story might run when they ’ re in a pinch for content on print
