Venice

Fishing in Venice in February is
much like fishing there in January. I
would like to make it sound more
exciting than that, but the fact of the

matter is that it can be at least that
tough if not tougher! The fronts usually become steadier and temperatures many times will get colder than
January. On pretty days outside when the weather really gets warm, like light
jacket or no jacket weather, trout can be found in some of the outer bays downriver such as Blind Bay and Redfish Bay or similar pockets. Other areas I like this
time of year with a high river especially are the bay's up in Buras and Empire if the
winds are very light. Typically, you don't want to get too far out from seeing the
the levee that follows highway 23. Tides and wind direction can really work in your
favor or against you. I like northerly winds that are light and falling tides or the end
of incoming tide's. You're looking for water temperatures that are closer to 60° when looking for a
good trout bite. When temperatures get closer to
the low 50’s they don't tend to bite very well in the
entire Venice area. I like to use a popping cork with
a small plastic like a 3 inch minnow. I've always favored black and chartreuse but everyone has their
own favorite. When you pop it let it sit for a while
before popping it again. It's not like spring or summer where you're looking to make a lot of racket.
You will probably want to try a slow twitch on the
bottom if the cork just doesn't seem to want to
