And that is what attracts people to thinking they want to work at Newell Strength or open up their own gym . There is nothing to copy though in terms of mechanics . It is really , once again , finding what Howard Thurman said up top , ‘ finding what makes you come alive ’ and going after it with fear sitting at your side .
I ’ ll come back to our old friend fear in a second , but before that , it ’ s important to note that even if you find what makes you come alive , it is not something that you can capture and put in a glass jar like we used to do to fire flies when we were kids .
There were quite a few times when I almost gave up on Newell Strength . It wasn ’ t that I wasn ’ t loving ‘ it ’. It was that my song , my coming alive , was evolving and I was trying to keep it the same . As I am writing this , I am on a retreat with a client on the looking at the Delaware River right outside my window .
A retreat to culminate the end of 3-months of transformation coaching with me . That is my next evolution . Yes , I still love nutrition and strength and still inspire my own spirit with Newell Strength but it ’ s important to know when an evolution is taking place and realize that it is YOUR duty to go with it , wherever it may lead .
Any thoughts popping into your head yet about where that path begins for you ? If not , keep reading because the spark of inspiration can strike at any moment …..
OK , fear , the oldest human emotion . If you ’ ve read any of my other writings from the past few years , you will know that I know and believe that most if not all fear is really an illusion .
‘ As Patton saw it , part of command is an ability to narrow focus , excluding from your field of vision those aspects of reality that would very sensibly create fear in an “ average ” person . If this is “ stupidity ”, embrace it wholeheartedly .’ ( Axelrod , ‘ Patton On Leadership ’)
When I read that line , I had to read it quite a few times . It so succinct and so brilliant . I feel fear just like the people that think they want to become involved in the fitness industry but can ’ t take the first step because they have ‘ golden handcuffs ’.
I had golden handcuffs too and I walked away from them . From the outside , it liked like pure stupidity . A few years away from a lifetime of a pension . A fun job with an awesome schedule . What was I thinking ?
I was thinking about how much I loved making people stronger . Fear was my little bitch on a leash next to me . Not out in front of me , capturing my line of site . I had tunnel vision on what I was going to achieve and fear was either going to walk me or I was going to walk it .
The fear that we think is damned obvious , the one that would be in our in line of vision , is the one that is the illusion . The real fear is the one that will come from the periphery . One that we never saw coming on an ‘ idle Tuesday morning ’.
