This was evident on Valentine’s Day when two firefighters from Lynbrook and another from Hewlett spotted smoke coming from a private residence. They quickly alerted the occupants of the home, who were unaware that their house was on fire, and assisted them out of the home. Their quick action in notifying the residents was key in getting them out of an unsafe environment uninjured. This is just another example of the commitment of the men and women of the Long Island Fire Service. From all of us here at FD Rant News we tip our cap to you guys for a job well done. The month of February was brutal in terms of the weather. During one of the coldest days we’ve seen in quite some time there were numerous working fires that kept departments from all over Long Island very busy. They were accompanied by the usual cold-weatherrelated emergencies and non-emergencies alike. What made this year a bit different is that in less than a week after these record cold temperatures, we then saw a tremendous swing in the other direction. On the weekend of the Mega Show at Suffolk Community College temperatures reached nearly 60 degrees. Mother Nature definitely has had the last laugh. Yet, the weather didn’t stop the Nassau County Firefighters Museum from making a huge announcement this past month. Thanks to a five year-old girl from Massapequa, the museum’s mascot, a Dalmatian puppy, finally found out his name. Lilyana Rodriguez knew that firefighters were brave and she tried to think of another word which described that bravery. With the help of her mom, Lilyana used a dictionary to find a synonym for the word brave and came across the word VALIANT. Well, that was the name she submitted as part of the statewide contest that the museum ran and it turned out to be the winner. On February 17th a wonderful ceremony was held to commemorate the occasion. Thanks to the efforts of the museum’s Executive Director Alana Petrocelli, Chief John V. Murray, the Massapequa Fire Department, and several other participants, the day was a huge success. Well done Lilyana! You have just become part of the wonderful history of the Nassau County Fire Service. Congratulations!
