Story and Photo by Jeff DiLavore
At 2236 hours, on Thursday, February 4th, the Kings Park Fire Department
was activated for a Signal 13 [structure fire] at 88 Walnut Road near Longfellow Drive. With all chiefs enroute, Smithtown Communications [4-2-0]
advised that direct calls were reporting a basement fire at that location.
Upon arrival at the scene, and after a size up, Assistant Chief James Purser [4-1-33] requested a re-tone for a Signal 13/35 [working fire]. Chief
Dan Guilfoil [4-1-30] requested mutual aid for a RIT from Smithtown Fire
Department to the scene. Engine 4-1-3 arrived first-due and secured a
positive water supply and stretched a 1¾“ hand line to attack the fire in
the basement of the two-story residence. With an aggressive attack, the
small fire was quickly knocked down and overhaul got underway. The
Smithtown Fire Marshal was notified as was Suffolk County Police Arson
for an investigation as to the cause of the fire. Commack Fire Department
also sent one engine to standby at Kings Park’s quarters during the alarm.
