On Friday, February 12th, the Mastic Fire Department, under the command
of Chief Rudy Sunderman, Jr. [5-12-30], responded to, and operated at, an
aircraft emergency at Calabro Brookhaven Airport. The chief discovered a
small plane which had apparently taken a hard landing and crashed into a
snow bank upon approach to a runway. As a result of the impact, a small,
smoky fire ignited and members stretched a line to combat the flames. The
two occupants of the plane were able to self-extricate with no apparent injuries. Mastic Ambulance was on scene to evaluate the occupants. The FAA
and the Brookhaven Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the incident.
