History & Timeline
1989 - Replaced greens with pen link
Prior to 1972, very little money and attention was spent on
course improvement at the Wanderers. Highveld golfers
resigned themselves to playing on brown fairways and brittle hard greens, but this began to change in the 80s as the
course was gradually upgraded to fall in-line with international trends.
1939 - Course opened with 10 playable holes
1942 - Remaining 8 holes opened
1982 - Over seeding greens with pen cross
1991 - Upgraded bunkers
1999 - The greens were resurfaced, redesigned, increased
in size and planted in areas of maximum sunlight. All bunkers underwent drastic re-shaping incorporating the principle of ‘grass down” as opposed to sand up. Included in the
redesign is a feature known as sub air. This equipment facilitates rapid removal of excess water from the greens. And
also removal of toxic gases from the sub soil. Thus ensuring
healthy root growth.
2004 - Addition of fairway bunkers to holes 5, 7, 9
Covered the concrete drain behind the 17th green.
1985 - Upgrade of dam on the 11th

The 10th
Out of bounds protects the right-hand side of the hole. Your
tee shot will have to avoid the gobbler on the left-hand
side of the fairway as well. Your second shot will be played
downhill to the green with dams protecting the left front and
right-hand side of the green. If you cannot hit the green,
then the best play will be to lay up short of the dams. The
green is rather long, yet narrow, and putting on the green
has a large break from left to right.

Stroke 9
The 13th
The highest stroking par 5 on the course, you will want to
start your tee shot left as the fairway doglegs to the right.
Beware that you do not hit your tee shot too long on the lefthand side as you will certainly run out of fairway.
Your second shot needs to be very accurate as the fairway
is protected by bunkers up the left side and, should your
ball find one of these bunkers, you will be faced with a very
daunting third shot to the green. The green is very narrow
as you approach it and your ball will always run away to the
right. Out of bounds hugs the right-hand side of the hole
and the flowerbeds behind the green come into play
very easily.
Make sure that you are more conservative on this hole as a
bogey can happen very quickly.
