A gathering of association
directors and officers in
the early 1940s shows men
dressed for winter—some
in nice coats, others in work
boots.
This gathering, also in
the early 1940s, took place
in Eldon, Missouri, and
included a couple of the
ladies.

From the very beginning annual meetings were used as a vehicle
for cementing member relations. As the years went on, they became
an important event in the families’ annual social calendar. Minutes
from the January 1942 annual meeting in Memphis, Missouri, paint
a picture of an entirely wholesome environment worthy of a Norman
Rockwell painting. Eleven members attended the meeting held in
the basement of the Christian church. Following the reports on the
state of the association and the ensuing discussion, dinner was served
by the ladies of the church “before and after which patriotic and
other songs were sung by the crowd.” Following dinner the minutes
read, “Enthusiastic talks were given by each director and by other
members.”
