Colorado…one minute we have snow and the
next minute it is the middle of the golf season!
Things have been moving very quickly the last
couple of months…between prepping for the
construction project, getting the pool and golf
course ready, selling memberships and being active
in our community, the staff has been going above
and beyond! I would like to publicly thank Drew
Stapelman, our Maintenance Manager, for working
tirelessly to not only keep the Club looking good,
but also for managing the ins and outs of our new
construction. It is unbelievably-detailed work and
a full-time job in-and-of itself, and Drew hasn’t
missed a beat. If you see him around the Club
please give him a pat on the back…we are lucky to
have him.
We have been talking a lot about the new
construction, so I would like to focus a minute on
the golf course and our ongoing commitment to
make sure we provide the finest golf experience in
Northern Colorado. We just completed a day long
“audit” if you will of our entire golf maintenance
department. Every spring and fall, Mike, Chris,
John and I spend the day with one of the top
agronomists in the country, Dean Wachowski of
Golf Maintenance Solutions, going through the
course hole-by-hole, the practice facilities, the
maintenance shop, the equipment, budget and
labor model. It is a great opportunity for Mike and
Chris to discuss their agronomic plans, practices,
and challenges and get great feedback about what’s
happening at other courses in our area and around
the country.
One consistent golf course recommendation I have
heard from a wide range of members since my start
last year has been the 18th hole…specifically the
lack of fairway which results in crowded cart traffic
patterns between the
bunkers and poor turf
quality. Last month the
Grounds Committee
recommended, and
the Board approved
the removal of the left
fairway bunker on
#18. With help from
our friends at Sequoia
Scott Szymoniak
General Manager
Greenscapes who are
already in Denver
working on another project, we are able to get this
accomplished at a fraction of the price it would
normally cost. This would actually restore the hole
to the way it was originally designed, and allow
for better dispersion of cart traffic and better turf
quality. The bunker will be removed June 10-12,
and we will have #18 set up as a par three for
those three days. The newly-sodded area will play
as ground under repair until it establishes. Don’t
hesitate to contact the golf shop if you have any
questions regarding the three days the crew will be
working.
With the excavation of the site for the new tennis
and fitness building, we kept a large amount of the
dirt that was removed. I am happy to say that with
this dirt we will be able to construct some new tees
on the course, beginning with the two ladies tees
that are on the scorecard but do not exist. These
will be built in-house after our crew has completed
the driving range project.
I appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding
as we continue to improve and position the Club
for success!
