Possession

We all know that Barcelona plays possession throughout their entire games. It's an effective strategy that keeps the opponent from scoring and frustrates them. Playing possession also controls the movement of opponent teams. The longer they play the ball in on one side of the pitch, the more space they create on the other. They also play wide to create enough space in between players for movement.

Tiki Taka

Barcelona has a very unique style of play that has now become known as tiki taka. Tiki taka is just the playing the ball very quickly from player to player causing the defense to freeze and lose sight of their target.

Opponents begin chasing shadows, players that happened to have the ball but have quickly given it up to another. The opponent ends up chasing neither the right player or the ball.

Doing this long enough causes confusion even in very high defense situations.

Most tiki taka situations involve three players. When one player is open, the other moves into position to make room for the player with the ball to pass or make another run.

The process repeats itself, providing a continuous link of open players

to pass to.

When the players cluster up, Barcelona players create dummy runs to make space for the tiki taka plays to happen behind the spaces they open up. It looks like a very easy game to play but it's very hard.

The passes must be very precise and quick. One small mistake will ruin the entire chain.
