We were joined at lunch by the owner of Best Rest ( Cycle Pump ) and his lawyer doing some real-world testing of some of Best Rest ' s potential products . They accepted our invitation to use one of our room reservations in Wiseman in lieu of camping amidst the wildlife , not highly recommended by the authorities .
Wiseman is a settlement 14 miles north of Coldfoot and three miles off the Haul Road along the middle fork of the Kayukuk River . Its few inhabitants subsist by trapping , hunting , fishing and gardening , except for the owners of the Boreal B & B . As the sun hovered near the horizon , I heard wolves howling for the first time . Nothing yippy like a pack of coyotes , but rather big , guttural , primal expressions , just the thought of which stands the hair up on the back of my neck .
