High Sierra
Stanislaus National Forest in California ’ s Sierra Nevada was established on February 22 , 1897 , making it one of the oldest national forests , and of the 2,859 miles of roads within its boundaries only 188 of them are paved . A good chunk of those 188 miles comes in the form of State Route 108 , which traverses Sonora Pass , the second-highest highway pass in the Sierra Nevada . Narrow , winding and often steep , with grades typically exceeding 8 % and maxing out at 26 % in some places , State Route 108 is not for the faint of heart , but its eye-popping scenery and remote wildness are worth it ..
