Into the Great Wide Open
Running for 253 miles through the wilderness of Quebec , Canada , the North Road is a rough dirt-and-gravel road that starts just north of Chibougamau and ends at the paved James Bay Road . There are no towns , no cell phone reception and just one place to refuel , but it is often closed . The road is open year-round , but temperatures are well below zero in the winter and the place is swarming with mosquitos and black flies in the summer . Not much in the way of scenery , either . Oh , and look out for black bears and logging trucks . Up for the challenge ? Photo by Jeff McQueen
