Rock ’ n ’ Ride
Mallorca , located 125 miles off the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea , is the largest of the Balearic Islands . The island ’ s sandy coves and turquoise waters appeal to sun worshippers , while its two mountain ranges appeal to spandex-clad bicyclists and curve-seeking motorcyclists . Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 , the Serra de Tramuntana , which runs southwest to northeast along Mallorca ’ s northern coast , is the more dramatic of the two ranges . Its rugged terrain is made up of enormous limestone formations , dense pine forests , picturesque lakes and a steep coastline with cliffs that plunge 1,000 feet or more directly into the sea . This is Ma-2141 , a narrow road carved into the limestone that climbs to the Coll dels Reis summit at 2,238 feet before divebombing through a series of hairpins and breathtaking twists and turns , reaching sea level at Port de Sa Calobra .
