Going the Distance
While Harley-Davidson was celebrating its 115th over Labor Day weekend last year , the Southern California Motorcycling Association celebrated its 50th anniversary by staging the 43rd Three Flags Classic ( a . k . a . 3FC ), a four-day ride through three countries . Starting in Puerto Peñasco , Mexico , on the northern shore of the Sea of Cortez , the route included stops in Gallup , New Mexico ; Rawlings , Wyoming ; and Great Falls , Montana , before concluding in Calgary , Canada . The roster included 221 riders , mostly from the U . S . and Canada plus a handful from Mexico . Among them was Rider ’ s Managing Editor Jenny Smith , who completed the 2,175-mile 3FC on a Yamaha Tracer 900 GT . She also rode to the starting point from Southern California and rode home via Montana , Idaho , Utah , and Arizona , racking up 5,040 miles in 7 days . Even though she was sore and tired and her ears were chafed from long days wearing earplugs , she was all smiles . Photo by Jenny Smith
